New universal controller KS 45 rail line
The compact solution for distributed automation
|

At the SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2003 exhibition, PMA Prozeß- und Maschinen-Automation, Kassel,
introduced a new range of high-quality, rail-mounted devices: the PMA rail line.
Following the UNIFLEX CI 45 rail line universal transmitter, the latest addition
to the range is the KS 45 universal controller. Designed for top-hat DIN rail mounting,
the controller features a particularly compact housing only 22,5 mm wide. Field
connections are made by means of removable terminal strips.
PMA's novel universal KS 45 controller offers many features that were previously
provided only in more complex units, or are completely new for this equipment class.
Noteworthy is PMA's typical BluePort® front interface for direct connection to a PC
or laptop. With the help of PMA's BlueControl® Engineering Tool, configuration and
parameter setting of the universal KS 45 controllers are particularly easy, in
addition to process value display and graphical trend recording.
The KS 45 is ideally suited for all thermal control tasks that can be handled with
switching outputs: 2-point, 3-point, or 3-point stepping. For this, the unit comes
with two relay outputs (optionally as optocoupler outputs). With the help of the
additional analog universal output, the KS 45 can even be operated as a continuous
controller! Due to the fast control algorithm (100 ms), it is also possible to
handle very fast heating processes. Moreover, the 2nd analog input permits continuous
monitoring, e.g. of heating current, or it can be used as an external setpoint input.
Alternatively, the 2nd input is available as a universal input, e.g. for additional
signal linking or for oxygen measurements.
The integrated maintenance manager provides warning when an actuator has reached a
predefined number of operating hours, or if an input needs recalibration! An error
list stores all generated fault messages. Because numerous additional functions,
such as auto/manual switchover, timer program, programmer, and sensor monitoring,
are standard in the new controllers, the installation time is reduced. What's more,
you don't have to provide supplementary operating or monitoring equipment, and tasks
that were previously handled by a PLC are now carried out by the controller itself -
lower investment costs plus considerably reduced outlay for installation and wiring.
Simple, 3-key operation from the front and a multi-line LC display - now also with
individual engineering units or texts - provide the operator with comprehensive
access to process data.
Another highlight is the direct RS 485 connection fitted in the DIN rail for
communication with adjacent rail line devices. Field couplers are available for the
established field bus systems such as PROFIBUS, CAN, Ethernet, etc., thus permitting
cost-effective linking of rail line equipment to PLCs, IPCs, and operating terminals.
Thanks to their comprehensive and stand-alone functionality, PMA's distributed rail line
units relieve PLCs and IPCs (independent of supplier) reliably from precise analog and
fast signal processing tasks. Compared with conventional methods, the installation and
wiring costs for PMA's rail line modules are significantly reduced. Another contribution
from PMA towards intelligent, cost-saving solutions for distributed automation.
